The Constable of the Town & Manor of Hungerford and the Liberty of Sandon Fee - Mrs Susan Hofgartner.

Was appointed by the Hocktide Court 2013, the latest in the long line of Constables founded probably by John Tuckhill in 1458 more than 550 years ago.

As The Constable she is expected to take the Chair of all formal Town & Manor of Hungerford meetings and to represent the Commoners interests.




 

The Immediate Past Constable - Mr Greg Furr.

This title and responsibility is handed to the Immediate Past Constable which gives a formal link from the out-going Constable to the new incumbent. He assumes deputy to the Constable and deputy chairman of the Trustees.

Greg Furr was Constable 2010-2013, and is a former Fishery Manager, now Buildings Secretary, and member of the Fishery Committee.






 

Commons Secretary - Mr Robert W. James.

Robert James was Constable in 1978-80, and was first elected as Trustee in 1971. He was appointed  Steward of the Hocktide Court 2002, and was an active Commoner from 1964 - 2007.

The Commons Secretary has the responsibility for the Management and the Maintenance of the land owned by the Town & Manor of Hungerford.

He is supported by the Commons Committee and Overseers who carry out support work and the maintenance of the Commoners Rights.

He is a member of the Fishery and Finance Committees, and is also editor of this website.

Croft Secretary - Mrs Barbara Barr.

Barbara is Secretary of the Croft Committee. She also sits on the Fishery and the Buildings Committees. The Church Croft given its rightful title came into the ownership of the Town & Manor of Hungerford in 1550 circa. It was registered as the Village Green 1965 and as such is protected within the law. The income is limited but it is a much used piece of property. Barbara Barr conducts the daily management and controls that are required. She was a career school teacher and is proprietor of a restaurant in Hungerford.

Barbara Barr was appointed the first ever lady Constable in 2007, and held the office for three years. She was first elected a Trustee in 2006.

Mr Tyrell AK Bossom.

Tyrell Bossom was elected Trustee in 2000, and was Constable 2000/02.

As a Water Bailiff, he represents the Fishery Committee to the Trustees. Prior to 1973 the Fishery was let to a tenant but since the Fishery was taken in hand the work has increased considerably. Together with the Fishery Manager and Water Keeper, combine to be the management of the fishery.

He is also a member of both the Buildings and the Commons Committees, and when required has been Deputy Bellman and Crier of the Courts.

A career accountant, employed by Royal Mail, and with his wife a proprietor of a retail needlework business.

Mr. Anthony Buckwell

Appointed by the  Trustees in 2011 and elected 2013. Past Town Councillor  and Town Mayor 2010/11. His particular interests  are in the Fishery and the Commons. Serves on the Commons and Buildings Committees.

An experienced trustee for local and international charities.


 

Finance Secretary - Mr Dennis W. Cryer.

This is the Treasurer and Accountant for the Town & Manor of Hungerford. The major responsibility is to prepare monthly and annual accounts for audit for submission to the Charity Commissioners. To achieve this he plans the Annual Budget, Banking, Investments and Cash Controls for the Financial Management of the business.

Dennis Cryer was first elected a Trustee in 1983, and was Constable 1989/90.

Mr. Stewart L Hofgartner.

Stewart Hofgartner was first elected Trustee in 1990, and was Constable 1993-95.

Deputy to the Buildings Secretary and also member of the Commons Committee and has particular interest in the High Street Trees.

He is the proprietor of a specialist antiques business and in recent years well known as a television personality on ITV.

Caroline Lumley was elected Trustee in 2013.

Mr. Bruce Mayhew.

Bruce Mayhew was first elected Trustee in 1993, and was Constable between 1996 and 2000. He had the additional responsibility of taking the Town and Manor through the millennium and the associated celebrations. He also produced the millennium book “Hungerford 2000”.

He is a member of the Commons, Fishery and the Buildings Committee. He also oversees the changes in the Commoners, their claims for rights and  changes in the Free Suitors as owners of the properties with  rights in the town.

 

Mr. Chris Scorey.

Appointed Trustee and subsequently elected in 2013. His  particular interests include Freeman's Marsh, the Croft, and wildlife conservation.

He is a career businessman and serves on the Commons and Croft Committees.

He is Chairman of the Hungerford Town Plan and produced the second edition in May 2013.

Other Officers and Members of Staff:

Mr Julian Tubb.

Julian became Bellman in April 2012 following the death of his close relative Robin Tubb, who has been Bellman for nearly 55 years.










 

Mr. Peter  Joseph.

He is Fishery Manager and  Water Bailiff and has the responsibility for the administration of the Fishery the  budget and accounts.

He is supported by  the Fishery Committee and works closely with the Water  Keeper and Tyrrell Bossom.

His previous career appointments were as parish council clerk and legal secretary to a firm of solicitors.

 

Mrs. Sylvia Breadmore.

The Clerk to the Constable and Trustees of the Town & Manor of Hungerford and the Liberty of Sandon Fee. Sylvia is also Assistant Steward to the Hocktide Court and co-ordinates the planning and implementation of Hocktide events.

Employed in 2006, her office is the Town Hall Lucas Room.

As Clerk, she manages all the administration of the Trustees and the Hocktide Court.


 

Mr. Robert Starr.

Water Keeper and Assistant Bailiff to the Town & Manor of Hungerford. Responsible for the daily management of the rivers and field management of the land. He is a co-opted member of the Fishery and Commons Committees. The Fishery is his CV.

Rob was employed by the Town and Manor in 1992.

He was brought up on the Longford Estate near Salisbury, and started fishing when he was four years old. He attended Sparsholt College Fishery Management Course, and other courses related to water quality and to his responsibilities for rivers and land..

Mr. John Morgan.

John is employed as Keeper of the Town  Hall and Corn Exchange.

He is responsible for the  day to day upkeep, all enquiries, quotations and bookings for meetings  and events.

He is available to advise  and to assist as customers require for the smooth operation of all activities in  the building.

 

Mr. Brian Liddiard.

Brian is employed as Keeper of the Town  Hall and Corn Exchange.

Shares the work and  responsibility in all aspects as set out above.

 

 



 

Sue Everett.

(MIEEM  Msc Graduate). Sue has been Consultant to the  Town & Manor of Hungerford since 2008, with special responsibility for Ecology and Sustainability, and for the  implementation of management plans relating to Stewardship.

 

 

 

Sally Wallington.

25 years in the business of Conservation and Land  Management.

Sally has been Consultant to the  Town & Manor of Hungerford since 2008, with special responsibility for  Development of Access and Education to Freeman's  Marsh by annual programmes of  study which include river life, wild birds, plants and wild flowers, bats and insects.  She also arranges practical field work for conservation by volunteer teams, and the promotion  of "managing your dog in sensitive areas of biodiversity".
