What is the Town & Manor of Hungerford and Liberty of Sanden Fee?
It is a property owning Registered Charity formed in 1908 to represent the Commoners and to act in the best interests of the inhabitants of Hungerford.
The charity is managed by the Constable appointed annually by the Hocktide Court and by tradition takes the chair at all meetings and represents the interests of the Commoners and in addition there are 10 elected Trustees who are voted into office from the residents from the area of benefit under normal parliamentary procedure.
The Town & Manor is not part of the generally understood local authority network but it does provide substantial benefit to the whole community by providing the Town Hall and Corn Exchange without cost to the local council tax payers.
Townspeople and for that matter visitors derive great benefit from the Commons, Port Down, Freeman’s Marsh, Lower Common, and Lower Meadow. The registered Village Green which is The Church Croft. Also the formal provision of the War Memorial Recreational Ground which incorporates the Cricket and Football grounds, a children’s playground and most importantly the War Memorial to those 38 men of Hungerford who lost their lives in WW II.
The Trustees are the owner custodians of several miles of the rivers that flow both east and west of the town and are riparian owners of 3 miles of the Kennet & Avon Canal and some of that history is recorded in other parts of this website.
